Back in October, Jenn and I decided to put up a holiday book sale for the collected edition of Darwin Carmichael is Going to Hell. It's been three years since the webcomic finished and the book was printed and, frankly, when I decided to print 2,000 instead of 1,000 books because "it only costs a little more, it would be crazy not to" I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
Hence, the annual holiday book sale. Most artists I know have difficulty promoting themselves, and I'm no different in this regard. I'm uncomfortable asking people to give me money for my work, but it's part of my job to overcome that discomfort in order to make my creative life sustainable.
Since the election, I've found that discomfort insurmountable. I've had difficulty saying anything at all, let alone anything as crass as commercial self-promotion. It doesn't feel right, when so many are full of fear and suffering. When I am full of fear.
I wish I had money to give directly, or more time to volunteer, or even more of a clear understanding of what I can do to help. Right now I am educating myself so that when I do take action, it will be considered and effective.
In the meantime, I have a shitload of books.
Please consider buying a volume of Darwin Carmichael is Going to Hell for yourself or as a present for someone you love this holiday season. I'm selling the books for $20 with free shipping, and all profits will go to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Since the book printing was covered by the initial Kickstarter campaign
that means that the only money taken out will be for shipping, which is <$4 in the USA. That means roughly $16 will be donated for each book sold.
It's not enough, but it's something that is within my power to do right now. Thanks for taking the time to read this and please feel free to share this post and/or the store link: http://dcisgoingtohell.bigcartel.com/product/darwin-carmichael-is-going-to-hell-the-book
